It is argued that "before the Lord" must be understood as before the veil which separated the most holy from the holy. Within the context of the ritual to be performed on the Day of Atonement, Aaron was instructed to "take the two goats and present them before the Lord." (16:7) This is defined as being at "the door of the tabernacle of the congregation." In the rules governing the burnt offering. "the door of the tabernacle of the congregation" is defined as "before the Lord." (1:3) To omit the altar in the court from cleansing on the Day of Atonement, would be to exclude from the services of that day the very place where most of the activity had transpired during the year.
"The altar that is before the Lord" (16:18) is the Altar of Burnt Offering in the Court. All were to be ceremonially cleansed as the result of the services performed during the year involving "the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar" (16:20).
In studying this chapter, there are certain linguistic details that must be kept in mind. What we refer to in our Adventist nomenclature as "the most holy place" is noted in this chapter as simply, "the holy" with the word "place" supplied by the translators (Lev. 16:2). The part of the sanctuary which we term, "the holy place" is noted as "the tabernacle." (16:16,17) The court is referred to as "the altar that is before the Lord." (16:18)
